Pet supplies and accessories

Pet suppliesThanks for visiting Pet-mart.com. Pet-mart.com is an informational site and does not sell any products or endorse any brands or pet care methods. If a pet is having a particular behavioral or medical difficulty, seek the advice of a qualified veterinarian for individual attention regarding pet supplies and care.

Anecdotal evidence and formal studies show that people form strong bonds with their pets. Therapy dogs have been shown to help patients heal faster in hospital settings. People with pets have lower blood pressure rates and report feeling less stress when they pet an animal. Owners of cats and other pets such as birds also reports strong feelings of affection for their animals.

Unfortunately, having a pet is a financial responsibility. A new owner must purchase pet supplies and accessories. Some important pet supplies include:

• Crates – these are essential for house training new puppies. A dog will not urinate where he sleeps so if a dog is confined to a crate overnight he is much less likely to have an accident inside the house. Crates and carriers are also useful for transporting cats to the vet.

• Beds – beds are more of a luxury item than crates. Most animals are fine sleeping on an old wool blanket. However, often times an owner takes pleasure in seeing an animal rest on a beautiful dog or cat bed. Beds can cost more than $100. However, they can also be found in discount stores such as Big Lots on clearance for as little as $20.

• Water and food bowls – it is possible to use food bowls that are already in the house. However, many animals will spill their water unless they have an extra large dish. In order to keep the floor clean many pet owners choose to purchase matching food bowls

• Doggie doors – these allow dogs to come and go as they please. They should only be employed in areas where traffic is not a danger to the dog. For example, if the dog exits into a fenced in area dog doors are fine.

• Clothing – while Hollywood megastars like Paris Hilton have made dog clothes seem like essentials for every pet, animal clothes are only necessary for shorthaired animals without much body fat that must be out in the cold on walks.

Once the necessary purchases have been made a dog or cat owner must realize that more goes into pet care than just having pet supplies.

Dogs and cats need regular trips to the vet just like people need to go to the doctor to stay well. Wellness visits and shots can cost up to $500 per year.

Potential pet owners should also read books about caring for a pet. Having a pet can be a complex affair. Just as a new parent will read baby books, a new dog owner should read books about having a dog and take the animal to an obedience class. Experts say that even if a previous owner has taken the dog to an obedience class the dog should still go again with the new owner. This way the owner and animal can learn and bond together.
